Jazz Cafe News
April 2010 Members Newsletter
I am still in shock that one year has flown by since the doors opened to our very first Jazz Café. One year ago my team breathed life to my vision of a monthly speak-easy at the Black Box. The energy and thirst for jazz I get from you all is the same I felt in the early months of opening. It keeps me inspired and makes my heart grow bigger because you love what we do as much as we love what we do. Each month we bring new arrangements and improvisational skills to life, which mix rather perfectly with the cocktails stirred…or shaken, from the bar!
Wednesday, April 14th is our last in the series of this amazing year. I have a very special treat for that evening. Stu Goldberg and Jakub Keiser will perform classical pieces giving texture to an evening prominently jazz. Classical music has been said to be a composer's medium. Jazz, however, is often characterized as the product of egalitarian creativity, interaction and collaboration, placing equal value on the contributions of composer and performer. On April 14th I am giving you a taste of both. I’ve always wanted to give an audience a concert like this. It will round up a great year for Jazz Café. You will feel the magic.
What a year!
This year Bernie Addington and I released a CD; LUSH LIFE which I hope you all have purchased and are enjoying. (For download or purchase info. please go to our website: www.jazzcafekelowna.com ). This year, we have also set up a Jazz Bursary through COBBS. Sang ‘Oh Canada’ at various charity and social events in and around Kelowna, we are collaborating with arrangements as well as writing more original material, and, putting together a mini tour. All this needs time and money and this is where we are concentrating our forthcoming efforts.
I would like to thank Mayor Sharon Shepherd for the recognition of the Spirit of Kelowna award as well as the Okanagan Arts Award for recognition in Music.
(Congratulations also go to Gary Pearson for his award in ART and Karen Close for her nomination in Arts Ed.)
I will keep you informed each month about what Jazz Café Band of musicians are doing; either individually or collaboratively. You, my dear readers and supporters will be the first to know what new and innovative insights we have to share or perform for you.
Please Note: Neville Bowman will star as Sweeney Todd at the Actors Studio for the whole of April. Get your tickets and lets all go and see him! He is amazing I hear.
Also, Bernie Addington will be performing at the Minstrel on April 1st with a fabulous band out of Vancouver named ‘Circus in Flames”. Check them out, they are very good musicians and Clare at the Minstrel always is very kind and accommodating.
