November Newsletter for Jazz Café

christmas presence
The weather outside is getting chilly and Jazz Café is warming up for its best shows yet. We have made some great music and there is still more creative energy in us to keep on playing! Thanks to all of you who support, or simply enjoy our music. My trip to New Orleans in October with Kelowna Chamber was very inspirational so I will be performing a few classics reminiscent of the New Orleans style jazz for our November 22 Jazz Café RE-BOOT show at the Black Box Theatre – doors open at 7 pm and show starts at 8 pm – email me on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call me on 250 763-6141 to reserve your table and spot at this speakeasy "where the gin is cold and the Jazz is HOT!".

Also tickets are now on sale for Jazz Café Presents...Christmas Presence!, our new and original Christmas songbook ranging from humorous to cuddly to inspirational – This concert is being held at Kelowna Community Theatre on December 23 at 7 pm. Purchase your tickets for friends and family by calling the box office on 250-862-2867 or online www.kelownatickets.com OR you can visit them in person at the Orchard Park Mall ticket office, accros from Rogers wireless . I love that you all continue to support us by spreading the word so we can have a full house to celebrate this achievement and hopefully raise enough money to record a CD!

Our gig calendar is at the end of this email for your perusal. So please jot the dates down in your diary, in case our paths can meet!

Hear yea! Hear yea! Blues lovers take note.....The Okanagan Jazz and Blues Society has reformed and as vice-prez I am honoured and able to tell you about its first concert in the upcoming series - I can't help but feel the rhythm and want to move my body when I listen to the music of Blues artist Arsen Shomakhov when he performs. Russian born Shomakhov can slide with ease into many genres with his guitar but the Blues chose him and he is now a craftsman of this genre. I watch his left-hand fingers work the fretboard, while the strumming right hand is doing this circular pattern around the base of the strings to create a rhythm exciting enough to watch as it is to dance to. This confident Blues Man has become a major force performing for Russian Federal TV, Moscow's legendary BB King Club and Blues festivals throughout Russia, USA and Canada.

The Okanagan Jazz and Blues Society are proud to announce The Arsen Shomakhov Trio as their first Dinner Dance Concert of the series. Please join us for a night out on Saturday November 14. OJBS has rented the Mission Creek Golf Course - second floor - 1959 K.L.O Rd - for an evening of Southern Style Eats with a Dance floor to shake it off when Arsen performs.

Tickets for this event are $55 to include Southern Style Buffet Dinner by Chef Alex Lavroff with Pulled Pork, Corn Bread, Deep Fried Prawns, Homemade Pies and Donuts (beignet, for those in the know). Also... an Oyster Shucking Station and cash bar. To raise funds for the Society there will be a Silent Auction and merchandising table to purchase your subscriptions for the series or just buy the t-shirt!  Richard Rafton owner of Milkcrate Records will have his blues collection on sale.  A full size dance floor and outside patio are there to be taken advantage of.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., Dinner buffet served at 7 p.m. and the music and dancing begins at 7:15 p.m. Purchase your tickets on-line at: www.okanaganjazzblues.org and find the paypal link - or in person through Milkcrate Records (1551 Ellis Street) or Duffers Restaurant & Lounge (1959 KLO Rd.) - Come support the Okanagan Jazz and Blues Society and enjoy a night out.  Plenty of free parking and taxi accessible for the over-served!

This Vancouver based quintet draws on Jazz, Brazilian Sambas, French 60ies pop with Parisian Gypsy Cabaret to influence their sound. They have a unique way of concocting music because of their eclectic pedigree of nationalities, as well as their unique ear for combining genres of music type.
